DEPARTMENT PROFILE

Brief History of the Department : 

                 The Department of Botany was established in the year 1969. The department offers undergraduate courses in combination with Zoology, Chemistry and Microbiology subjects as B.Sc. [Botany, Zoology and Chemistry – (B.Z.C.-T.M.)] and [Microbiology, Botany and Chemistry – (MB.B.C.-E.M.)] with a sanctioned strength of 40 & 30 students per batch respectively.

            The department of Botany has three sanctioned posts. The department has two spacious well furnished and well equipped practical laboratories for conducting UG practical experiments in Botany. The labs are well equipped with modern scientific equipments like Spectrophotometer, Electrophoresis kit, PCR kit, Soil testing kit, Colorimeter, Staining kits, Digital weighing machine, Digital pH meter, High speed centrifuge, Thermostatic water bath, Incubator, Thermostatic oven, Simple and Compound microscopes, all the modern lab glassware and chemicals. 

                The department also maintains a mini Botanical museum showcasing several plant specimens in the form of herbariums along with many rare plant pods and seeds of medicinal importance. The department has an Over head projector (OHP) along with the white screen and Bio-visual charts that are used for teaching and seminars. The department has a computer, printer and internet facility for smooth departmental functioning. The department also has one LCD projector along with one virtual classroom facility for the smooth usage of ICT enabled education by the staff and students. 

               A Botanical garden with several rare and important medicinal plants is maintained by the department. A vermi-compost pit for producing organic manure and rain water harvesting pits are also maintained by the department. The department has organised an UGC sponsored national level seminar in life sciences by Dr. A. Lakshmaiah during the year 2016. Most of the ex-staff members of the department have received many state and national level awards at various levels, including the state best teacher award by Andhra Pradesh Government to Dr. A. Lakshmaiah in 2017. 

               The department maintains a library with strong literature resource consisting of subject text books and practical manuals of all the semesters and annual system, in addition to this there are many other books related to various competitive exam preparations.       

         The department maintains MoU’s in collaboration with other institutions and colleges with regard to many productive and mutual developmental aspects. The departmental staffs actively participate and present papers in various international, national and state level conferences, seminars and workshops for enrichment of their subject knowledge.

             The department has published several research articles and one book in international & national journals. Every year the department conducts guest lectures to the UG students by inviting experts from various fields as resourced persons. The departmental staffs also extend their services to the students of other institutions by delivering extension lectures every yea

           The  department conducts botanical tours and educational field trips every year to the UG students for enriching their practical and subject knowledge on plants. The department conducts many study projects and models that are carried out by the UG students to enhance their creative thinking. The department every year rewards the subject meritorious students with the cash prizes under endowment prizes. 

              The department has so far successfully produced 52 UG – B.Sc. (B.Z.C.-T.M.) and 20 B.Sc. (MB.B.C.-E.M.) batches.
